Article On Identity Theft

"World is expanding in terms of technology nonetheless shrinking in terms of security".

Hi friends, in this cyber era a secure transmission of information is a challenging task at stake. Many people do not realize how easy it is for the criminals to obtain the data with out really breaking into our homes.Unlike the finger prints which are unique to the individuals, personal information like SSN, credit/debit account number, billing address, and other valuable details might be at stake when explored by the criminals.

I would like to expose to viewers an original story occured in the year 2007.

An identity theft - a large scale data breach involving 40 million customers, 9 retailers a federal court and the 11 felons.

The case highlights as "an increasing vulnerability to personal information".

They hacked the computer systems by illegally tapping into the wireless payment processing systems of the retailer outlets and installed software to access account details and passwords.
Retailer explains "This was the first time ever that our systems were wiretapped".
One among the convicts was a confidential informant working for the secret service agency. With a double agent involved

This is so far the biggest ID theft.

Alleged thieves weren't computer geniuses, just opportunists who used a technique called "wardriving,'' which involved cruising through different areas with a laptop and looking for accessible wireless Internet signals. Once they located a vulnerable network, they installed so-called "sniffer programs'' that captured credit and debit card numbers as they moved through a retailer's processing networks.

There are concerns that identity theft is costing the US billions every year.In 2006 Bush administration set up an indentity theft task force comprising 17 federal departments and agencies.

I personally found the article interesting as it involved 45 million customers with a simple wardriving software technique to hack the network.
